British MuseumOriginally, this museum has been built in 1753 in order to protect the arts collection of the physician Sir Hans Sloane. British Museum is one of the oldest museum in the world.
Today, the museum houses the collection of Sloane as well as numerous presents and purchases from all the world, which means a display of thousand years of art history.
Robert Smirke was in charge of the building and the architecture of the British Museum. He decided to make a square, Great Court, which is a covered square surrounded by shops, coffee and restaurants .
The museum is organized in several departments so as to visit the museum easier.
Indeed, the floors of the museum propose a display of different collections like African art on the ground floor or the Asian collection on the upper floor.
The most attractive exhibitions that the museum suggests are the Elgin Marbles, reliefs of the Pantheon, Lindow Man and the Egyptian mummies.
It is absolutely fantastic the gold coffin of Henutmehyt and Ginger mummie, a mummified body dated over 5000 years ago. Among the most important finds in the museum is the famous Rosetta Stone, the key to understand egyptian writing and decipher it.
There is a section where is reproduced coins history, where it is possible to find almost all of coins existing in the world.
This museum is free, but we invite all the visitors to make a little donation so this fantastic place will remain free!
