The King Henry VIIIHenry VIII was the youngest son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He became King at the age of 17 in 1509 when his father died.
First of all he has been very famous for his 6 marriages. Indeed, he married successively 6 women. Some of them died, were executed or simply divorced.
In 1509 his first wife was Catherine of Aragon who gave him a daughter, Mary, he divorced her in 1533.
This first divorce provoked a scandal in the religious institutions and Henry VIII was excommunicated by the Pope. After that, Henry VIII formed the Church of England.
In 1533, Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn. She was executed for treason in 1536 and this marriage brought him another daughter called Elizabeth.
His third wife was Jane Seymour. He married her in 1536 and she died giving birth to Henry's lone male heir: Edward VI.
In 1540, Anne of Cleaves was her wife for a few months and the same year he married Catherine Howard who has been beheaded for infidelity in 1542.
His last wife was Catherine Parr he married in 1543. She took care and brought up his children till his death n 1547.
In 1536, Henry VIII ordered the closing of all religious houses; he became the owner of their huge wealth. Indeed, in the 16th century, the incomes of monasteries were four times larger than the ones of the royal family.
Actually, Henry VIII did not rule the country himself; he preferred go hunting on the countryside. One of the people who virtually ruled the country was the Archibishop of York Thomas Wolsey.
Henry VIII had great ideas of invasion and expansion of his power. He invaded France and built also Camber Castle situated between Rye and Winchelsea in order to face an eventual attack of the French forces.
The famous conflict between Henry VIII and Scotland in 1545 is the result of the failure of his marriage with Mary Queen of Scotland.
He denounced the reformist ideas of Martin Luther and the Pope himself gave him the price of "defender of the faith".
On death of Henry VIII in 1547, his lonely son Edward VI became King of England.
